Getting started with Signal: from installation to your first message

Choose a platform and install Signal
Start with the phone you use every day.
- Open the Android or iOS download page to check device requirements.
- Install through the official channel linked on this page, then open Signal.

Follow the initial setup instructions
Stay connected and continue with the steps in the app.
- Choose registration or device linking, then follow the on-screen setup steps.
- Before reinstalling or changing phones, confirm how you will restore your chat history.

Help friends recognize you
Add a recognizable name and profile picture.
- Open your profile in Signal settings on your phone.
- Edit your name, picture or bio, then save as prompted.

Send your first message
Say hello to a friend who also uses Signal.
- Start a new message and select a contact or search for their full username.
- Type a message or add photos and files, then tap Send.

Bring conversations to your computer
This optional step makes it easier to chat on a larger screen.
- Install the version for your computer and open it to display the linking QR code.
- Add a device under Linked Devices on your primary phone, authenticate, scan the QR code and follow the instructions.
